Howdy, and apologies ahead of time, as I may cross-post this. I have a good VHS copy of the fabulous 1930 film, "King Of Jazz" featuring Paul Whiteman and his cronies. Since there are no plans afoot to properly release this on DVD by anyone (that I know of), I'd like to convert my VHS tape to DVD format. Does anyone in this tribe have the capability to do this, and would you be interested in dubbing this for me? I have money, I can pay, but ideally I'd love someone to do this as a trade...and I'd even make copies for anyone interested for postage costs of shipping said DVD. I'm just tired of dragging my closeted VCR out every time I want to watch this film.

  • Paul Blake @ East Bay Media Center on Addison Street in Berkeley can do the job.
Where are you located? I'd love to toss in a couple of bucks toward this project in order to get a copy myself.
Contact me @ <muggmuggles@gmail.com> and let's get this show on the road.
    • Thanks, I found someone on Craig's List to convert it. First attempt failed due to the built-in copy protection feature. She's trying it again with a new piece of hardware she bought, hopefully this will work. If not, I'll take up your suggestion. I'll definitely keep your contact info. Let's see how she does before I try another place. Kinda' funny...not only is this wallowing in utter obscurity, the only release has been made un-copyable by MCA/Universal. Such a waste.
      • I had no idea VHS tapes had/have such copyright protections.
I've never heard of this problem when people make tape-to-tape dubs...
        • Yeah, I think it's an actual chip in the case vs. some type of coding in the video. Not sure. I copy DVDs all the time and maybe only 1 out of 25 have some type of protection that won't allow. I'm going to e-mail this woman and find out that status of my transfer. Sure would be swell to watch this morning (Sat.). Guess I'll stick to my old Warner Bros. cartoons for the moment.
          • some friends bought a player a few years ago that has a vhs and a dvd recorder and were able to convert old vhs tapes fairly easily, but they sold it after converting all of them. maybe newer ones don't work as well. i have a copy of steppenwolf that i would like to convert to dvd. max von sydow is great as harry haller in that film based on the book by herman hesse.

if you find something that works please let us all know. .
            • I'm in the process of transferring "The King of Jazz" as I write this. It looks like it's working fine. I have a device (from Israel) that let's me bypass any kind of copyright on videos. So if you would like a copy on DVD I'd be happy to mail it to you.
              Just let me know.

              Paul
